Pigmentation and fine lines around the lips that do not come under the spell of topical treatments can be treated using in-office peel and lasers. This lines are developed when muscles around the mouth tighten hence folding the overlying skin. Dr. Zeichner admits that peels and lasers can assist in reducing the appearance of lines while improving the texture and tone of the skin. Dr. Neil Sadick, a dermatologist who operates in New York, recommends a chemical peel containing alpha-hydroxy acids and also skincare regimen with brightening elements such as hydroquinone derivative or kojic to supplement the Clear + Brilliant laser. The doctor other recommendation that will help stimulate elastic and collagen production is the use of microneedling which contain or lack radiofrequency. The microneedling generate small injuries to the skin around the lips.

Dr. Zeichner says that the border of the lips called white rose loses its definition as one ages. Due to the loss of structure at the border, it normal for lipstick to bleed onto the skin from the red part of the lips. The best treatment that the doctor recommends is treating it with a filler that will help it restore its structure and volume. Good treatment will help differentiate the lip from the skin but overtreatment may lead to having duck-lips. The lips can be made more defined by hyaluronic acid injections such as Juvederm, Restylane Silk or the more refined Volbella without changing the size dramatically. Dr. Zeichner also acknowledges that a few drops of Botox can reduce wrinkles and lines since it relaxes and softens the muscles around the mouth. However the doctor warns that the lips may not be purse strongly and also for a few month drinking from a straw may not be permitted.
