Thousands of witches around the country congregated on February 24, 2017 to cast a compelling spell on Donald Trump. While taking part in the mass enchantment, singer Lana Del Rey encouraged her supporters on social media to take part in the event too. The rallies which have since become a monthly practice, take place on the night of the vanishing crescent moon as soon as midnight approaches.

In the past witches were burnt or at very least demoted to the sidelines of the society. However, nowadays witchiness has not only turned mainstream and used as a philosophy, a personal style and a form of self-care but it has also won patina of cool. Retailers such as the Urban Outfitters are lousy with candles and crystals. Influencers like Emma Roberts are expected to flaunt a sensation reading on Instagram since they are the latest outfit. Most of the hottest skin-care ingredients (bee venom, snail mucus) in the beauty industry appear like they have been prepared in a sweltering cauldron as a replacement for a lab.

Gucci has led the way as witchcraft expanses into the fashion arena. Alessandro Michele steered in Resort 2019 with a compilation that can be labeled as a Goth teen’s craziest dream. This is after the artistic director’s much talked about fall collection which comprised cephalophores – saints who give a picture of carrying their own disconnected heads and a parade of dragon bearers. The show which took place in a Roman necropolis in southern France was supplemented by a theatrical 17th century melodic masterpiece sung in Latin, candles and smokes. The elites in fashion to some extend were retold of their own mortality after being surrounded by the dead. There were laces, tall boots, crushed velvet, long sleeves, crucifixes, brooches, capes, high collars, veils and spikes. Vera Wang’s jet-black tulle, Louis Vuitton’s bone-white Victorian dress and Max Mara’s ethereal cloaks were other brands which displayed similar preferences.

Although modern witchiness is challenging for the male observation, it discloses itself through fashion with garments that convey a healthy connection with humanity and articulate happiness. The dressing is about pleasing oneself and not a vague other. While Grey gardens meet Wednesday Addams, Wednesday Addams meets Stevie Nicks who meets nuns. Luxe then meets feelings and you meet the rest.

Currently outwards approval is not a concern among witches. Their lives focus on their craft and their own pleasure as they build their identities choosing metaphysically or aesthetically at a time. The titular witch known as The Master and Margarita becomes that way by rubbing demon’s cream all over her body and taking off to fly into the night comes from Mikhail Bulgakov. The rest of us have put on our capes and are following her footsteps
